Brachot for the endtimes (Unknown author/s from Riot Bayit, unknown date, two tiny zines)

Brakhot for the Endtimes

Metadata: I found these zines in a garage sale thrown by Riot Bayit in August 2022. They have no identifying metadata and search engines have turned up dry. Riot Bayit is a "Jewish, income-sharing, communal home," according to their zine Riot Bayit Oyspruv, which has some similar collage techniques and handwritings. With that in mind, it seems most likely that household members of Riot Bayit made these zines, but I have no way of knowing their names. Due to their ephemerality, I have chosen to textually transcribe the tiny zines for posterity.

There are two zines, both made with collage, bound with yellow embroidery floss, and 16 pages, one 1/8th size (roughly 3" x 4"), the other smaller (roughly 2.5" x 3.25"). They are written in in different handwritings, in English, Hebrew, and I presume Yiddish; I am unable to digitally transcribe the Hebrew, and may make spelling errors with the Yiddish. First, the 1/8th size one:

Front Cover: Collaged yellow paper with a green forest scene. The title is handwritten: "Brachot for the endtimes"

Page 2: a snowy pine forest, in shades of blue and white, collaged with red and yellow fire coming up from beneath. Collaged text reads, "Bracha for fighting CLIMATE CHANGE"

Page 3: blue paper, with what appears to be handwritten notes attached, reading: "Blessed are you who teaches us that all the joy in the world does not cancel out all the pain & all the pain in the world does not cancel out all the joy. Thank you for the understanding that the opposite of hopelessness does not have to be hope, but can be love. Thank you for reminding us to honor our grief & our love."

"Even if the world is unable to be repaired we will fight because we're in love with a world worth fighting for."

Page 4: Yellow paper, with a black and white scratchboard drawing of a plate, fork, knife, and spoon on a table. The text is handwritten above and below:

Above: "Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha'olam Shehakol niyah bidvaro"

Below: "Belssed are You, Lord our G-d, Ruler of the universe, at whose word all came to be."

Page 5: Blue paper, with three bits of handwritten text on white paper cut out and glued atop it, along with two white shooting stars of David.

Top Text: "Blessed are You who makes the works of creation."

Middle Text: In Hebrew. I sadly have no way to transcribe or translate it, sorry. I assume it's the same sentiment as the text above it?

Bottom text: "barukh atah Hashem eloheinu melekh ha'olam oseh ma'aseh vereishit"

Page 6-7: a collaged snow-covered tree in a winterscape, with individual handwritten words cut out one at a time and pasted on top.

Text: "Bracha for Taking anti-depressants

"Blessed are you for creating our minds with heights & depths & each their own gifts & Thank you for the tools to balance them"

"Blessed are you eternal one our G-d ruler of Time & Space who has made me in G-d's image"

"Baruch ata Shekhinah eloheinu melech ha'olam sh'asani b'tzelmo"

Page 8-9: Fuzzy, indistinct photo of blue and white trees, with indivudal handwritten words painstakingly torn out (not cut) and pasted on top, looking like clouds on a blue sky.

Text (in bold): "Modeh Ani"

"Modeh ani l'fanecha melech chai v'kayam shehechezarta bi nishmati b'chemla raba emunatecha"

Text (normal weight): "I offer thanks to You who has restored my soul within me"

"Your faithfulness is great"

Page 10: Collaged figures on picnic blankets, resting out on a green lawn.

Text: "Bracha for a 1:1"

Page 11: A blue sky (I think) with a black bit of paper pasted on top, big block letters handwritten in white.

Text: "Blessed are you for that which is created between curious open people*"

Footnote (handwritten in black text on white paper): "*or is it a date?"

Page 12: A close-up photo of plant stalks, so close and abstract that they might as well be streams of motion. On yellow paper is black Hebrew text, which sadly I am unable to transcribe or translate.

Page 13: Teal background, with cut-out animals: a moa, a prehistoric human, an enormous brown eagle, a sabretoothed tiger, a mammoth. Every word of the text is different, cut out individually and pasted on top: some handwritten, some clearly snipped from magazines.

Text: "Blessed are you who makes the creatures different"

Page 14: A rainbow created from cut strips of colored construction paper laid next to each other. Each colored strip has a line of text in black on white paper cut out and pasted on top. Above and below the rainbow, in purple crayon or colored pencil are the words "EACH GAY IS A BRACHA"

Text: "Thank you for language that brings us closer to ourselves & our communities. Thank you for our intricacies that cannot be contained by language. Thank you for love in all its beautiful, messy forms."

Page 15: Background made of torn up collaged black text on white paper, illegible. Colored purple construction paper with black handwritten text stripe the top and bottom, and a green square in the middle contains big black handwritten letters.

Top purple stripe text: "Blessed are You, lord our G-d, ruler of the Universe who has sanctified us with commandments & commanded us to study the Torah."

Green square text: "Barukh atah Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha'olam asher Kid'shanu b'mizvotav v'tzivanu l'asok b'divrei torah"

Bottom purple stripe text: "Blessed are our revolutionary ancestors whose words we study so that we may learn from & carry on their work."

Back Cover: colorful collage of flowers and blue, yellow, and purple paper. Individual words are cut out or handwritten, no two the same.

Text: "Thank you to the infinite who gave us the ability to make zines"

Now for the extra tiny one:

Front cover: Black paper, with tissue paper houses collaged on in primary colors, with white letters cut out and pasted on top.

Title: Brachot for the endtimes

Page 2: A blue gradient, with white strips containing black handwritten text pasted on top, and a similarly cut out hand-drawn stick figure sitting peacefully in the corner.

Text: "Barkuh ata adonai eleohenu melekh ha'olam shehecheyanu v'kiyimanu v'higiyanu la'z'man ha'zeh"

Page 3: A bird's eye view of a green forest and river, so far above it almost seems abstract. It too has white strips cut out with black handwritten text, and a little stick figure with hands on hips.

Text: "Blessed are you who has given us life[,] sustained us & brought us to this moment"

Page 4: A dark blue page with white constellations and their names on it. White strips of paper handwritten with black capslock text adorn it, along with a white cut-out paper crown.

Text: "Bracha for Checking Your Horoscope"

"Blessed are You, Creator of the Universe and all the mysteries contained with it. Thank you for heavenly bodies and their effects on our bodies."

Page 5: Black paper, with closecut white paper containing black handwritten text and also the phases of the moon.

Text: "Birkat HaLevana"

"Praised are you O G-d, creator of the universe who created (bara) the skies with her word & all the heavens host with the breath of their mouth. She gave them appointed times & roles & they never miss their cues, doing their creator's (konam) bidding with gladness & joy"

"baruch yotzrich
"baruch osich
"barcuh konich
"baruch bor-ich"

Page 6-7: Collaged purple, gold, and aqua paper with maroon stripes, adorned with white strips containing black handwritten text

Text: "BRACHA FOR TEXTING A CRUSH

"MAY I HAVE THE SELF ASSUREDNESS OF A YOUTUBE COMMENTER AND THE WIT OF 1,000 MARX BROTHERS

"MAY I BE RASH, VULNERABLE & CONFIDENT

"MAY I REMEMBER THAT THIS REALLY DOESN'T MATTER ALL THAT MUCH."

Text: "Bracha for taking a nap"

"blessed are you who commands us to rest. may we rest, all shabbat & in 20ish minute chunks through the week from which we will wake clear & calm & not feeling like a soup can pulled from the back of an apocalypse stash and finally opened after 30 long years"

A cut-out hand-drawn stick figure takes a nap at the bottom of the page.

Page 8-9: A photo of a cloudy sky, more clouds than blue. The text is written in black directly on top.

Text: "Asher Yatzer

"Baruch ata Adonai Eloheinu melech ha'olam asher yatzar et ha'adam b'chachma y'vara vo n'kavim n'kavim Chalulim Chalulim. Galuy v'yaduah lifnei chisei ch'voe'decha sheim yipa'taye'ach echad may'hem 'o yisa'tame echad may'hem 'i efshar l'hit'kayaim v'la'amod l'fanecha. Baruch ata Adona l'ofei chol basar u'mafli la'asot.

"Blessed is G-d who has formed the human body in wisdom and created within it many openings & cavities. It is obvious & known before You that if one of them were to be ruptured or blocked it would be impossible to survive & stand before You at all. Blessed is G-d who heals all flesh and acts wondrously"

Page 10-11: A serene body of rippling water, a leak perhaps, in blue green. Text is handwritten in black on white strips of paper.

Top text: Hebrew; sorry, can neither translate nor transcribe

Left text (in script): baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha'olam sheh-a-sah et hayam ha-gadol

Right text (in print): Blessed are you Eternal our G-d ruler of the Universe who made the great sea

"Thank you for reminders that the universe is large & we are small" (the word small is written in tiny text so as to fit on the page, next to a little drawn heart)

Page 12: A grayscale photo of what may be an archaeological dig, or perhaps a city after it has been bombed. Handwritten directly on it are the words "Bracha for going to a Protest." A cut-out stick figure wields a huge sign which reads, "May we remember that 'justice is what loves looks like in public' --Cornel West"

Page 13: Red and white checkerboard, like a picnic blanket. Closecut white paper contains black handwritten text, and a little cut out stick figure wields scissors in front of a mirror, with tufts of cut hair on the floor.

Text: "Bracha for Changing your Hair to Deal With an Emotional Crisis

"Blessed are you Shekhinah for giving us Low risk choices in times of impulse and turmoil"

At the bottom of the page is a little scribbly animal: a dog maybe?

Page 14: Handwritten in black ink on blue-lined looseleaf paper, adorned with black doodled asterisks

Text: "Bracha for Applying to a Job

"may we find hope in new opportunities. May we treat ourselves with gentleness as we find ways to survive under capitalism."

Page 15: A collage of many cut vegetables, leafy greens, and other plans, all every which-a-way. In black double-lined capslock handwriting, individual words have been painstakingly cut out and pasted on top.

Text: "BRACHA FOR QUITTING A JOB

"MAY WE EACH UNDERSTAND OUR CAPACITY FOR JOY & HAVE THE CLARITY TO LIVE OUR LIVES IN ACCORDANCE WITH THAT JOY"

Back Cover: blank, what appears to be a collage of green parasols adorned with lines of much lighter green lights. Also possibly abstract leaves covered in dew.
